TAS: Starting gun to sound in Big Bird Race

The feathered field in the inaugural Big Bird Race is due to lift off, with the starting
gun to sound at a London launch today, Australian time.

Eighteen juvenile shy albatrosses will take part in the race from breeding grounds
off Tasmania to the finishing line in South Africa.

The idea for the race was hatched by The Conservation Foundation to raise money and
awareness of the plight of the endangered birds.

Backed by global betting giant Ladbrokes.com, the birds will be tracked via radio transmitters
and punters worldwide will be encouraged to make a wager on the race with all profits
going to bird conservation.
