NSW: Pair arrested at gunpoint before alleged ATM attack

SYDNEY, Feb 20 AAP - Guns poised, police were waiting for two men outside a Sydney
credit union on Friday morning, expecting another in the series of attacks on automatic
teller machines (ATMs).

About 3.30am (AEDT) on Friday officers arrested the men at gunpoint outside a financial
institution near the corner of The Boulevard and Matthews Street at Punchbowl in southwest
Sydney, police said.

"A crime scene was established with investigators also seizing a BMW sedan, suspected
of being stolen, and gas cylinders," …

Hisham: Probe into `police brutality' lies
Byline: M. Hamzah Jamaludin
Edition: New Sunday Times
Section: Main Section

KUANTAN: Police and the Attorney-General's Chambers should take action against those who spread lies about police brutality against demonstrators during the illegal Bersih 2.0 rally, said Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein.

He said action should also be taken against those who posted baseless allegations against enforcement agencies on the Internet.
"We are prepared this time around as we know their intention. The police have all the recordings and they will also investigate the lies in cyberspace."

He said this after opening the Prisons Department's Community Rehabilitation Centre at the Batu 10 Army camp near here yesterday.

He said police would release more video footage soon to refute claims made by the opposition and Bersih supporters against the authorities.

"They should take responsibility for their actions and words as no one is above the law."

He said rally supporters had claimed the police were cruel and had caused someone to die when dealing with demonstrators.

"It's in their nature to make slanderous statements. They should stop it."

Hishammuddin said it was a desperate move by the opposition to detract attention from their problems, including the sex video involving Parti Keadilan Rakyat de-facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

He said the authorities would never forget the main issue and police would take action against Anwar if it was proven that he had lodged a false report on the sex video.

Asked why police took almost two weeks before releasing the footage on the rally, he said the force had to study the footage and confirm it was genuine before they could air it.

"They cannot simply upload video clippings without verifying them."

He said the opposition would continue tarnishing the country's image, especially after Malaysia was ranked the most peaceful country in Southeast Asia and the 19th safest and most peaceful in the world by the Global Peace Index.

"By creating chaos, they can deny the ranking given by the international body and the achievements made by the government."

On the community rehabilitation centre, he said the government would consider building more such facilities after studying the success of five centres built in army camps since March.

The centre places petty criminals in low-security detention centres in army camps.

SA:SA unemployment rate steady

Employment Minister TOM KENYON says South Australians are confident about finding employment
and continuing to look for work.

Jobs figures released today show the headline unemployment rate in South Australia
remained steady at 5.3 per cent in November.

Mr KENYON says it's the third lowest headline rate of all the states and the same as
the national rate which went up by 0.1 percentage points to 5.3 per cent.

He says the November figures also show there are six and a half thousand more South
Australians in jobs than at the same time last year.

FED:Company calls for tougher safety rules

By Andrea Hayward

CANBERRA, April 4 AAP - A tougher regulatory framework is needed to reduce the unacceptable
level of workplace deaths in Australia, construction group Leighton Holdings says.

The company has called on the federal government to improve safety regulations, particularly
in the construction game, by adopting a regulatory framework that includes clients and
designers involved in procurement.

It has recommended the adoption of the UK's design and management construction regulation.

Leighton Holdings chief executive David Stewart said there was a real opportunity to
introduce a new framework while national occupational health and safety (OHS) approaches
were being harmonised.

"Australian workplaces should be among the safest in the world," Mr Stewart said.

"Currently they're not, which is simply unacceptable.

"The fact is that the number of accidents and fatalities in construction is far too
high and the incident rate has not shown any real signs of improvement over the past five
years."

Mr Stewart said that, sadly, Leighton Group was not immune from workplace deaths.

"Despite safety being an absolute focus across all our operations, we have continued
to experience fatalities," he said.

As many as half of all workplace injuries and fatalities stem from a failure to take
account of OHS considerations at the design and procurement stage of construction projects.

There was compelling evidence safety outcomes were positively influenced by the direct
involvement and commitment of clients to safe construction, Mr Stewart said.

"When everyone involved with the construction process is responsible for safety we
get less people killed and injured," he said.

The company wants to work with the government to deliver safer workplaces.

In response to draft regulations published by Safe Work Australia Leighton, has recommended
a regulatory framework based on the UK's construction design and management regulations.

"This regulatory framework puts a specific set of obligations on clients and designers
as part of the construction procurement chain," Mr Stewart said.

Vic: 40 "safer places" designated as fires burn in state's east

By Michelle Draper

MELBOURNE, Dec 24 AAP - Victoria now has 40 official neighbourhood "safer places" for
people to turn to as a last resort in a bushfire.

The updated figures, obtained from the Municipal Association of Victoria (MAV) on Thursday,
came as fires continued to burn out of control in the state's east.

Campers were evacuated at Wingan Inlet in the Croajingolong National Park as a precaution
on Thursday morning while firefighters battled to contain a 76 hectare blaze.

However, they were allowed to return to continue their Christmas celebrations in the afternoon.

"All the camping areas in Croajingolong National Park are now open," a Department of
Sustainability and Environment spokeswoman told AAP.

About six fires burned in the East Gippsland area on Thursday, although most were within
containment lines.

The spokeswoman said nine aircraft worked to extinguish the out-of-control blaze 23km
north of Cann River.

Heavy machinery and fire crews worked to construct control lines around the fire perimeter.

The major concern for firefighters was the threat of a northerly wind which could push
the fire beyond containment lines and towards the Princes Highway, but the threat eased
later on Thursday.

Meanwhile, MAV chief executive Rob Spence said local councils were pushing through
approvals of safer places which had been assessed by the Country Fire Authority (CFA).

Mr Spence said on Thursday that 40 neighbourhood safer places had been officially designated
by councils across 15 municipalities.

There are 21 high-fire risk towns with one or more neighbourhood safer places but 18
towns in the same category are still without a designated place of last resort, he said.

The City of Greater Bendigo, which has designated seven neighbourhood safer places,
has started sign-posting them.

Mayor Rod Campbell said the sites were only to be used as a last resort.

"But we do believe that they are an important tool when it comes to being vigilant
during the bushfire season," he said in a statement.

He said the locations all had buildings or spaces that could offer some protection
from radiant heat, the biggest killer during bushfires.

The list of neighbourhood safer places can be found on the CFA website.

Fed: Business rakes in $61 billion worth of profits

CANBERRA, Dec 1 AAP - Businesses are yet to feel the full effects of the global economic
crisis, ratcheting up total profits worth $61 billion in the three months to September.

This was a 5.2 per cent seasonally-adjusted increase on the previous quarter, more
than the 3.5 per cent hike economists forecast for gross operating profits.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics data also showed business inventories - goods in
stores and in warehouses - rose 0.7 per cent in the September quarter, in line with expectations.

This build-up in inventory is more likely to be the result of slack consumer demand
rather than businesses restocking, given the current weak economic outlook.

The data feeds into Wednesday's gross domestic product (GDP) for the September quarter.

Prior to Monday's data, economists were forecasting GDP to rise just 0.2 per cent for
an annual growth rate of 1.9 per cent.

Fed: Swim coach's life ban over clash with daughter overturned

MELBOURNE, Dec 24 AAP - The Ukrainian swimming coach banned for life from the sport
after an ugly row with his daughter at the FINA World Swimming Championships in Melbourne
will coach again within days.

News Limited newspapers reported today an international court ruled Mikhaylo Zubkov's
lifetime ban from swimming was too harsh.

Zubkov was caught on video violently arguing with his swimmer daughter Kateryna, 19,
on the pool deck at the FINA championships in Melbourne in March.

FINA's lifetime ban on Zubkov was overturned by the Court of Arbitration for Sport
in Switzerland, which capped the ban at eight months, expiring on December 27.

The court described the FINA ban as too harsh and inappropriate, given the circumstances.

Zubkov was defended by a Melbourne legal team headed by sports law specialist Paul
Horvath and lawyer Paul Hayes.

Zubkov said the decision was a "huge relief".

"I feel my name has been cleared," he told News Ltd.

Kateryna said she was delighted her father could resuming coaching her and supporting
her in competitions.

"I am very happy. I can now concentrate on the Olympics."

FED: Govt warns of scam emails whipping up discontent

CANBERRA, Aug 17 AAP - The federal government is warning of an email campaign whipping
up discontent among the elderly by claiming refugees receive more welfare support than
age pensioners.

Minister for Families, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs Mal Brough today said
age pensioners should be alert to the "scam" emails, which claim refugees receive $2,500
per month in financial support.

"The claims in the email are blatant lies, which are also being repeated on websites
and chat rooms," Mr Brough said.

"What concerns me most is that the scam targets older people and uses the plight of
refugees to whip up discontent.

"Clearly as the election approaches there will be those who go to any lengths to try
to influence people."

Mr Brough said he had no idea who was behind the emails, but says a similar campaign
was recently mounted in Canada.

"I urge anyone who receives these junk emails to treat them as such - mark them as
junk - and send them to the trash can."

Showdown could be near in Mexican unrest -- U.S. journalist, 2 others slain

OAXACA, Mexico — Protesters vowing to fight to the death hauled massive tree trunks and used semitrailers to block highways leading into Oaxaca on Saturday as federal police with riot shields and rifles poured out of planes, preparing to crush five months of violent unrest.

With neat piles of rocks behind them ready for confrontation should police try to storm town, the demonstrators left just one lane of the main highway into the city open and were allowing only taxis and other local traffic through.

Nearby, a sign trumpeted tourist attractions and proclaimed "Welcome to Oaxaca!" It was a stark reminder of how far this picturesque city has slid toward chaos in violent protests to oust the state governor.

Shop owners shuttered their businesses after President Vicente Fox ordered federal police to intervene. Fox, who leaves office Dec. 1, had refused repeated requests to use force in Oaxaca. But gunbattles Friday that killed a U.S. journalist and at least two Mexicans apparently exhausted his patience.

Fox's Interior Department issued an ominous statement late Saturday demanding protest leaders "immediately hand over streets, plazas, public buildings and private property" so that federal authorities can "guarantee public order and adherence to the law, as well as preserve respect for the population's individual guarantees."

Escalating protests

It was unclear how many officers of the Federal Preventative Police were converging on this long popular tourist destination, though police in gray uniforms and carrying shields poured off of transport planes at Oaxaca's airport, which was closed to commercial traffic.

Teachers union leader Daniel Rosas said protesters believed 4,000 federal police had arrived.

In unrest that began with a teacher strike for higher pay, leftists have blocked streets for months demanding the ouster of Oaxaca state Gov. Ulises Ruiz. They say the state government has sent gunmen and thugs to provoke them.

After Fox announced he was ordering in federal police, protesters fortified their positions by piling up sandbags and parking large trucks and buses across roads leading into the center of Oaxaca.

Some demonstrators blocked the main highway in from Mexico City, waving Mexican flags and chanting "Get out Ulises!"

"I think there's going to be violence," said Eutelma Cruz, a 54-year-old housewife and protester. "I hope [federal forces] intervene and find a peaceful solution."

Men also were seen removing broadcast equipment from one of the local radio stations seized by protesters months ago. A second station held by leftists remained on the air, urging Oaxaca's residents to prevent federal police from entering the city.

Stores closed

Few people ventured from their homes. Across the heart of the city, nearly all shops and restaurants closed early. Street vendors packed up their wares and disappeared.

"We're afraid there is going to be more shooting," said Juan Lopez said as he pulled metal shutters down over the glass storefront of a sporting goods shop a half block from Oaxaca's leafy central plaza surrounded by arcaded colonial-era buildings.

Friday's deadly violence began when gunmen tried to remove a street blockade in a rough neighborhood. Journalist Bradley Roland Will, 36, of New York, was hit in the abdomen and died later at a Red Cross hospital.

Oaxaca resident Esteban Zurrita was shot dead and the bullet-ridden body of another man, Emilio Alonso Fabian, was discovered about two miles away. A photographer for the Mexican newspaper Milenio was slightly injured.

Will worked for Indy-media.org, an independent Web-based media organization and sold video on a freelance basis, said friends and Indymedia colleague Hinrich Schuleze. He had been documenting the upheaval in Internet dispatches that showed strong sympathy for the protesters.

"What can you say about this movement, this revolutionary moment," he wrote in a dispatch dated Oct. 16. "You know it is building, growing, shaping, you can feel it, trying desperately for a direct democracy."

Oaxaca Attorney General Lizbeth Cana, who has likened the protesters to urban guerrillas, said the shooting was sparked by angry townspeople defending themselves against the demonstrators.

"The people are fed up with permanent violence, threats and kidnappings," she said.

Shootings, clashes

But U.S. Ambassador Tony Garza said in a statement that the shooters may have been Oaxaca police, and the Mexico City newspaper El Universal published photos Saturday identifying some of the men firing at protesters as local officials.

Mayor Manuel Martinez Feria of the nearby town of Santa Lucia del Camino said five men who appeared in the photos brandishing pistols had been turned over to state officials for possible involvement in Will's killing. He identified them as two members of Santa Lucia's city council, two of that town's police officers and a former justice of the peace from another town.

Local police officers — often out of uniform — and armed gangs have staged sporadic attacks on protesters, and at least five other people have been killed.

Several other shootings and clashes were reported in Oaxaca on Friday, and Red Cross officials said Saturday they treated 18 additional victims of violence, though none suffered gunshot wounds.

Teachers went on strike in May demanding higher pay and better working conditions. But after police attacked one of their demonstrations in June, they extended their demands to include a call for Ruiz's resignation and were joined by leftists, students and Indian groups.

The struggle escalated into a fight for control of Oaxaca's streets as demonstrators occupied the central plaza, built barricades, seized radio and television stations, drove off local police and burned buses.

The protesters contend the 2004 governor's election was rigged by Ruiz, a member of the former longtime governing Institutional Revolutionary Party, which lost its hold on Mexico's presidency when Fox was elected six years ago.

Australian officials in Egypt have made contact with one of two women injured in the blasts.

The women are from Queensland and NSW.

Consular officials in Canberra have made contact with the family of one of the women.

They are still trying to contact relatives of the other.

A DFAT official is heading to Dahab to offer assistance to other Australians in the region.

A DFAT spokeswoman said the department "strongly condemned" the attacks.

At least 23 people, including foreigners, died when the bombs went off in crowded areas,
with scores of others injured.

An Australian tourist caught up in the attacks described how the bombs went off in
quick succession in an attack world leaders are calling an act of terrorism.

"There was a mass explosion and we ran away, and then ran back to try and find friends,"

Australian tourist Owen Norris told BBC News 24.

"There were people running round with blood coming out of their faces."

Norris had been dining at a restaurant two down from where the first bomb went off.

"As we were running we heard the second two (bombs) ... (they) were within six metres
of each other."

Ama, the Potter, Creates the Human Body

Ama, the Potter, Creates the Human Body (Jukun/Nigeria) Ama, the creator, a high god, may be a fusion of two or more gods, being sometimes regarded as a male being, at others as a female, sometimes as the creator, other times as the earth goddess or world mother. Ama, creator of all living things, patron of childbirth, nourisher of crops, identified with the earth, queen of the underworld, sits before Chido, who is always present on earth, creating men and things.

Ama created the world at early dawn. She (or he) made the firmament and holds it up. Ama is the earth: when a man dies he goes to Ama, for every living thing that dies, whether human, beast, or bird, returns to earth. She reigns in Kindo, the underworld, from which humans came, to which they all return, and from which they may return to earth a second time.

She fashions the human body, bone by bone, as a potter, builds up her pot strip by strip. When Ama has finished fashioning a man, Chido breathes life into his body, and for this purpose Chido descends to the earth. Similarly, Chido is the giver of grain to men, but it is Ama who fashions it. She is the earth, which is fertilized by Chido in the form of rain. See also: Chido, Fi.

GRANDPARENTS, PARENTS HEAD TO SCHOOL

Vickie O'Connor of Highland remembered sitting at wooden desks with inkwells instead of pens decades ago.On Tuesday morning, O'Connor, 55, and her husband Tom, 57, took a trip on the information super-highway to see how their granddaughter uses technology in the classrooms at Clark High School.

"Don't Worry, It Won't Byte," was the slogan Tuesday for the Grandparents/Senior Citizens Day at Clark Middle and High School.

"I think the computers are great for kids," said Tom O'Connor. "We had to go to the books and hunt down the information when we were kids. When I was in school back in the '50s, I was in more trouble than I was in school. Nowadays, they have more to do in school. Computers could keep a lot of kids interested in learning."

Fallon O'Connor, 14, a freshman at Clark, showed her grandparents how to use the Internet.

"I'm happy they are here," she said. "Now I know they care about what I learn. They seem really fascinated."

Patty McKinley, head of the technology department at Clark, said the school staff opened its doors on Tuesday to allow grandparents and other senior citizens the chance to sample the Compaq laptops, Gateways, IBMs and Macs used at Clark.

"We wanted to bridge the gap between the generations," McKinley said. "They have been having a ball.

"When they were in school, there were chalkboards. Some of the grandparents were afraid to touch the computers. They said they were afraid they would break them."

Cindy Boilek, a sixth-grade reading teacher, gave a demonstration with the "Interactive White Board," a laptop computer connected to a projector, which projects images onto a white board.

"We can do virtual field trips on the Internet and project it up here," Boilek said. "We can use any of the applications, such as Excel, Power Point, Windows and Word, and we can project it and we can work with it."

Students use special pens to write on the screen or write with their fingers.

Boilek typed a sentence on her laptop. She then took an electric pen and showed how students use the pen to underline verbs in the sentence.

Just because students have technology does not mean they have perfected reading and writing and basic skills, Boilek said. She pointed out that students might spend a lot of time talking in chat rooms on the Internet, where young people use "slang" and disjointed sentences.

"The challenge is still the same," Boilek said. "They still need to know words, sentence structure and grammar. THIS ELECTRONIC VERSION MAY DIFFER SLIGHTLY FROM THE PRINTED VERSION.
