FED: Foreign food lables and caffeine controls remain
Australian food regulators have moved to protect labels which tell consumers wherefood is produced.
And they've raised alarm about the rise in caffeine-boosted products.
The members of Australian New Zealand Food Regulation Ministerial Council met in Sydneyyesterday.
They agreed to keep the country of origin on labels -- despite claims from the NewZealand government and a national competition policy review that the labels were costlyfor business, and confuse consumers.
The meeting of Australian and New Zealand health ministers also raised concerns aboutthe rising impact of high caffeine additives, especially on children.
The council ordered an investigation into the use of guarana -- a herb with high caffeinelevels -- and have called for a clear definition of cola drinks to stop softdrink makersavoiding restrictions on caffeine levels.
