DAVIS RACES TO GLORYFAZIOLI ALSO WINS AS SECTION II REIGNS.(SPORTS)

CANTON -- It was a sloppy mess.

Section II runners, however, overcame the mud and water hazards to hog most of the honors. And it was a pair of the smallest packages which provided the biggest splash.

Erin Davis of Saratoga and Jen Fazioli of Averill Park not only claimed more individual titles but led their respective teams to glory at the state cross-country championhips on Saturday.

Addditonally, the Burnt Hills' Class B boys earned their first team title ever in a meet which saw Section II dominate all six divisions. Galway was runnerup in the Class C girls, Shenendehowa was a close third in the Class A boys and Greenwich settled for third in Class C boys.

Almost 700 runners from 11 sections battled extreme weather conditions on the water-logged campus of St. Lawrence University.

``It was the worst conditions I've ever seen,'' said Davis who sewed up her fourth state individual crown in this her last year at Saratoga. ``I was really worried about the water. In some places it was up to my knees. But, right off the path, it was about four feet deep.''

Nevertheless, Davis plowed through it to post a winning time of 19:31.5, more than two minutes slower than her clocking at last weekend's Section II meet.

``The conditions were so bad, you had to run the tangents wide,'' Davis said. ``And I was freezing. But, the conditions were the same for everybody. Near the end, I just tried to make the most of it and have fun.''
